This site will be blocked on January 18th in protest of the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) two bills which will allow the government to censor the internet.  Find out more at americancensorship.org or the accompanying video.

While I will not be blocking my blog today in protest of SOPA and PIPA for personal reasons, I do feel it is imperative that all U.S. residents understand the consequences of this legislation were they to be passed (which it doesn’t look like they will, I might add). As a journalist, I am a fierce opponent of censorship of any means. SOPA and PIPA are Congress’ attempt to police the Internet in a way that goes beyond previous anti-piracy bills. Now, copyright infringement is a very serious offense. It is taking someone else’s work without consent and/or giving due credit. Yet, penalizing websites whose users commit these offenses or that provide links to websites containing pirated works by blocking the site altogether is outrageous. It would severely inhibit access to information, particularly access to international information. That is absolutely censorship and it shouldn’t be tolerated. Spread the word.
